Thinking about volunteering in Nepal but not sure what your day-to-day will actually look like? Here's a realistic breakdown of a typical two-week placement, based on our Teaching & Education and Conservation programs around the Kathmandu Valley and Chitwan.
Week 1: Arrival, Orientation and Settling In
Your first two or three days are dedicated to orientation , airport pickup, an introduction to your host family, safety briefings, and a walkthrough of your placement site, whether that's a community school or a conservation project. By day three or four, most volunteers are shadowing local staff and getting a feel for the rhythm of the work. Expect some jet lag, a lot of new faces, and plenty of dal bhat.
Week 2: Settling Into the Work
By the second week, the nerves wear off and the real impact starts. Teaching volunteers are usually leading full lessons independently by now, and conservation volunteers are contributing meaningfully to ongoing fieldwork rather than just observing. Evenings are for relaxing with your host family, and weekends are free for exploring , most volunteers use their one weekend to visit Kathmandu's heritage sites or take a day trip to Nagarkot for Himalayan sunrise views.
